CHALLENGE

A dominant force in convenience retail

Henderson Group is one of Northern Ireland’s largest employers, with around 5,500 staff, and dominates the country’s convenience retail sector.

Recognizing an urgent need to embrace agile, data-driven operations, Henderson Group embarked on a transformation journey. It had used QlikView since 2006 but saw the need for a more comprehensive approach.

Henderson Group saw that giving staff the tools to be more self-sufficient would allow them to adapt quickly while IT delivered more complex projects and move the business to the next level of its journey.

APPROACH

The transition to self-service

Adopting a transformation motto of ‘Simpler, Faster, Better’, Henderson Group created BI Champions and a governance model to provide guardrails. This ensured accuracy of information and ultimately increased confidence in the data.

Qlik Catalog enabled Henderson Group to turn multiple data sources into a unified resource. Qlik Continuous Classroom provided vital initial training and enabled the business to build a solid grounding to build self-service apps and dashboards in Qlik Sense. By the end of 2023 it had 25 BI Champions and 31 apps.

The next steps for Henderson Group include further exploration of Insight Advisor and AutoML, while extending Qlik Sense’s reach further across the business.
